Parkview is Committed to Supporting Recovery, Recognizing National Recovery Month

Posted September 27, 2023

Each September, Parkview invites customers and partners to pause and celebrate those in recovery from mental illness and substance use. During National Recovery Month, Parkview honors the evidence-based work of mental health and substance use disorder treatment professionals, as well as the commitment of the clients they support to live healthy, rewarding lives.

Recovery is for Everyone

Chances are, some of your patients or residents have a so-called “dual diagnosis.” That’s because mental health and substance abuse often go hand-in-hand, leading to poor health outcomes and other challenges like incarceration and homelessness.1 For these individuals, recovery represents their opportunity to “improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential.”2

That’s what makes a holistic, inclusive approach to supporting recovery so meaningful for patients, their families and loved ones, and our community. During this month, consider reviewing protocols for screening, prevention, and treatment to ensure recovery is an option for all patients who seek it.

Every Person. Every Family. Every Community.

Recovery has many faces, and it’s an incredibly personal journey that must take into account an individual’s unique needs, such as their race and ethnicity, socioeconomic background, gender, and sexual orientation. If your organization plans and implements recovery programs, below are some questions to consider2,3:

  • What does recovery mean to your patients and communities?
  • How can services be modified to better align with patient’s needs and preferences?
  • Which linguistic and/or cultural barriers to recovery can staff help to address?
  • What changes can be made to help ensure spaces are welcoming and supportive for everyone?
  • What local resources exist to help support your patients’ recovery?
